Pile Integrity Tests by Sonic and Ultrasonic Method

During the construction phase it is important to know the integrity of the piles, Due to the fact that Bored piles are subject to issues such as:

  • Presence of voids; 
  • Inconsistency in concrete mi
  • Entrapped groundwater or slurry
  • Geometric errors.

For that matter we offer a quality control through the sonic method generating the “pile’s profile” determining the continuity of it and possible defects that could jeopardize the Pile’s load bearing capacity.

The sonic method is also known as Echo Test, Pulse Test,  Impulse Response consisting of hitting the top of the pile with a plastic hammer of low weight, the blow induces a signal that is reflected at the bottom of the pile and sensed by an accelerometer that digitizes the data, which are then processed by the PET software.

Using acceptance and rejection criteria, anomalies or representative peaks are classified to identify concrete failure generating results and interpretations of possible defects in the pile.

This test is usually performed to pile groups, so we can correlate the information obtained with the information and design parameters.

The tests are performed under ASTM standards.

We also provide Pile integrity testing through Cross Hole Ultrasonic Monitoring (CHUM) method. 

CHUM method for pile integrity testing is one of the most complete tests available on the market to determine the integrity of Bored Concrete Piles. The method is based on recording the time it takes an ultrasonic wave to propagate from a transmitter to a receiver moving simultaneously by two parallel tubes embedded in the pile.

In case there are defects in the path of the waves such as inclusions, voids or other issues the wave propagation velocity variate and is recorded at it’s corresponding depth. For this test, it is essential that during the construction of the piles 2 – 4 tubes are installed depending on the pile’s diameter.

During processing, using rejection and acceptance criteria, anomaly classification is generated to make decisions that meet design standards.

Everything is performed under ASTM standards.
